Department Chair

Innovative Interdisciplinary Mechanical and Energy Engineering Program

The University of North Texas (UNT) College of Engineering announces a nationwide search to recruit a Department Chair for an innovative interdisciplinary BS and MS Mechanical and Energy Engineering Program (M&EE).  M&EE will be the fifth department in UNT’s new College of Engineering.  Planning approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has been received.  The program is being designed to provide innovative up-to-date education with particular emphasis on modern interdisciplinary approaches to energy considerations in engineering.

The selected candidate will be appointed to the rank of full Professor, initially within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering until the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering (M&EE) is formally constituted, at which time the selected candidate will become its Chair.  The selected candidate will be responsible for curriculum design, facility planning and program implementation for both the undergraduate and M.S. programs in M&EE.

There may be openings for high quality collaborators engaged in a funded transportable research project but this is not indispensable.  We anticipate seeking approval for a doctoral program in M&EE after we have experience with MS graduates.

Successful candidates must have an earned Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering or a closely related field, be a recognized scholar and educator, and have the credentials necessary to qualify for an appointment at the full professor rank.  Credentials must include: a significant publication record, a strong research funding record (including federal funding agencies), academic administration experience, experience with curriculum development to meet ABET-EAC accreditation requirements, and knowledge of innovative curriculum development and implementation.  Service in professional societies, including service on elected boards, editorial boards of journals, and program committees or international conferences, is very desirable.  The candidate should demonstrate, seek, and promote innovation in engineering education, particularly in his/her specialties.

Applications and nominations, including detailed curriculum vitae and a list of at least five references, should be sent to:  Chair of M&EE Search Committee, College of Engineering, University of North Texas, P.O. Box 310440, Denton, TX 76203-0440, or electronically to the Founding Dean, College of Engineering, ogarcia@unt.edu.  The committee will begin its review of the applications immediately and will accept applications until the position is filled.
